Kidd
JHo
Bass
Dirk
Gortat
Big AND Fast.
Maybe our perimeter defense is off a bit, but our inside game and rebounding would be MONSTROUS

Could Bass play SF? |

I know that would mean JHo moves to SG, so really, the question is...Can JHo play the 2?

i wouldn't mind that starting 5 at all but doesn't it sound so much better to trade Stack and other scrubs for a legit starting 2.....that would put
bass on the bench backin up dirk where he is so good, along with JET, JJB, and Damp.....that would seriously be the one of the best benches in the league

I proposed this last off-season. The issue is whether or not he can guard 3s, b/c Dirk plays the 3 on offense for us. While he was quick enough coming out of
college, he probably put on too much bulk to be able to guard 3s consistently. I am now convinced that he is a PF with a good mid-range shot. I'd love for
him to stay, but he should go out and try to find a team he can either start for or play 25 mins. I wish him all the best.

Well, if Bass plays backup to both Dirk and Gortat and gets 30 min a game, then he should stay in Dallas. I wonder if that's a possibility.
I do think we could get some kind of 2 with the Stack chip and even another 2/3 type for Dampier. I'm just trying to find a role for Bass that's bigger (and more productive) than last year, because anyone else who signs him will find him plenty of minutes.

Without question Bass can and should play the SF. There is no one his size that can handle him. Was Bird too slow to play the 3....like everyone claimed.
Was Mark A. too slow? Bass would punish the opposing small forward.
It was a simple thing. Take the 67 win team, cut Croshere, Buckner and Ager. Add Bass, Fazekas and RTerry. |

I'd be willing to give it a shot; I think the question would be his lateral movement.....would he get burned defending perimeter players who drive to the
basket (i.e. imagine him trying to stay w/ a driving Paul Pierce after a perimeter shot fake.)?

I think he can and have been wanting Avery and Rick to play him there for a while now.

i am disappointed that he was never given a shot at the 3-- however, if Gortat is signed-- i would be surprised to see Bass back in Big D. if it wasn't
tried in the past-- i can't see them resigning Bass to try the "experiment" now. Barring a major deal (highly unlikely)... Damp will prob stay
through most of the season, if not all-- plus-- we still have Singleton and Hollins, who both earned more minutes last year.

Dirk is a better option at 3 than Bass. Bass doesn't have great handles, can't create his own shot from the perimeter, isn't a great passer, and
doesn't have the lateral speed to guard most wings.
Bass is better off getting better in the post on both ends of the court. That is where his potential value to the Mavs has always been. Instead he's been developing a jumper and trying to turn himself into a wing. And if he's going to keep doing that, he's not worth re-signing. Retaining Bass comes with a mandate: be a better post. |

Here is the number 1 problem with playing bass at the 3 and having JHo at 2.
Kidd- not quick enough to guard his position Jho- not quick enough to guard his new position Bass- not quick enough to guard his position Dirk- barely quick enough to guard his positin Gortat- probably quick enough We can only compensate for slow feet at so many positions on the court, and Dirk is usually one of them. Things could get really ugly in terms of man-to-man defense, but we would be the best rebounding team in the league, BAR NONE! I was a huge proponent of playing Bass at the 3, especially with how unorthodox our all-world 4 is. Bass is 3 on defense and 4 on offense and Dirk is the opposite. However, if we don't trade Jho for a real 2-guard, then we will be too slow at almost every position on the court. In a vacuum, Bass and Dirk seems like a good 3-4 combo. I'm just not convinced any longer that it's a good fit with our roster.

Jamey we rarely agree on politics, but you are right on about Bass. I just do not know why he can not play the 3...

Can Bass play the SF......I would say yes he can play it. But I would say that are defensive quickness would be hurting too much with the starting lineup of
him in the SF position.

we could always play zone. Make perimeter shooters out of the opponent, and for certain, no interior offense for ANYONE

somehow i just cant picture bass spotting up for a three pointer. maybe he can shoot the three ball? i dunno but i cant remember ever seeing him try one. a
good sf needs to be able to stretch the floor.

Bass is a PF. Josh is a SF. We shouldn't try to fit round pegs into square holes if we can help it.
Anyone but Baron. Or Charlie V.

polishammer wrote:Offense isn't the problem. Our 4 stretches the floor, so it isn't necessary from the three. Dirk would play 4 on defense and 3 on offense. Bass would be the 3 on defense and 4 on offense. That's the only way it would work, and there is an outside chance it could if our 1 & 2 could guard their positions.

But if we're looking for points inside, why do we want to encourage Bass to play more on the perimeter? It makes no sense. The guy already plays outside
the post too much for my taste. He needs to get better inside.
