Grizzlies rookie Darrell Arthur committed his first major turnover, and training camp still is three weeks away.

Grizzlies newcomer Darrell Arthur faces an unpleasant meeting with owner Michael Heisley, who said he is "extremely disappointed" in the player's apparent marijuana use during the league rookie program.

The two will be fined at least $20,000, according to the source. Arthur could face more discipline from the Grizzlies, who could levy a suspension.

ESPN.com also reported that Arthur and Chalmers were entertaining women.

Marijuana use is illegal and prohibited under the league's anti-drug policy. Having visitors at the rookie transition program is not permitted.

Arthur will soon attend an unpleasant meeting with Griz owner Michael Heisley, who reacted angrily at the news.

"I'm extremely disappointed," Heisley said. "And disappointed is putting it mildly. We're going to have a very serious discussion with Darrell and his agent. We're going to make sure he understands very clearly what the guidelines are. We'll see how that discussion goes and go from there."

Arthur, a 6-9 forward, and Chalmers were approached by hotel and NBA security at a resort where NBA rookies were beginning a mandatory four-day seminar. Coaches, referees and former players annually lecture on issues such as drugs, handling finances, the importance of character and image, the difference between NBA and NCAA game rules, legal matters and dealing with media.

The situation may have been further exasperated, according to the source, because Arthur and Chalmers initially refused security entry into the room, prompting police officers to become involved. It is not known if the players or women possessed the marijuana.

No one was arrested.

Per league policy, Chalmers and Arthur will have to attend the program again before the start of next season.

Memphis rookies O.J. Mayo and Marc Gasol are also attending the seminar.

Griz general manager Chris Wallace hadn't spoken to Arthur as of late Wednesday afternoon. Wallace said he looked forward to a face-to-face meeting in the coming days.

"I'm disappointed Darrell showed poor judgment," Wallace said, adding that "Darrell is a good person. I still feel Darrell will go on and do a lot of good for himself and the organization. We'll deal with this when he gets back (to Memphis)."

The NBA conducts random tests four times a season. Under league rules, the first marijuana violation requires a player to enter the league's Marijuana Program. A second such violation could draw a fine of $25,000. A player can get a five-game ban with a third positive test for marijuana, or for violating terms of his aftercare program.

Attempts to reach Arthur and his agent were unsuccessful.

Arthur and Chalmers were integral parts of Kansas' NCAA championship win over Memphis in April.

Projected to go in the lottery, Arthur fell to the 27th spot after erroneous rumors of a health problem circulated throughout the league. The Griz traded for the rights to Arthur on draft day. The early-entry candidate played two years at Kansas and was selected by New Orleans, then traded to Portland and Houston before coming to Memphis.
